On Elevators and Chairlifts

You probably have read my blog about my resignation as the Project Coordinator to one of the big construction firm in our city. Having to decide on that was quite hard since I have learned to love my work in the construction industry. That decision to quit my high paying job was because of a more important job I have now. To be the construction Engineer of our church building and take charge of all the necessary papers and planning involved. I also have to work full time as church secretary as well.

Taking charge of almost all paper works and the double checking of the design to meet the building standard here in our city is one stressful job. We have to review blue prints so that our building design will be according to the standard set by the Building officials. One thing I noticed with our building application and approval in the Office of the Building Official was their reminder to include a provision for chairlifts for the handicapped or differently-abled church goers we have. They told us to have a ramp for wheel chairs or an elevator since our building design is for three storey.

I agreed with the building official’s recommendation since it is important too for our church building to have a provision for the handicapped church members so they will not be having a hard time going upstairs to our Main sanctuary which will be located on the second floor. While preparing for the plan, I searched for residential elevators and found www.home-elevator.net . I guess the freedom residential elevators will be appropriate for our church since it has a capacity of 1000 lbs, and the elevator’s cab runs up to 36 feet per minute.

But lately the City building office approved the non inclusion of the ramp since our building construction was revised from three to two storey. Our building committee will discuss this matter if we will push through with its installation or not.
